What A Gentleman

David Fairchild was the only Uncle that I knew but would have topped the list had I known 100! He was a kind, gentle person who loved his son, wife, grandchildren and daughter-law. His only other love was music. Although distance dictated that we saw each only once a year, he always had interesting things to say when we met. He knew so many music dignitaries and took me to see the Count Basie Orchestra. He understated his stature in life although to so many, it was larger than what he thought it was. That is what's called humility.

How many people in their 80's strive to work, rather than shy away and retire to tropical conditions and poolside chats? He was a giver, not a taker. I could go on but one thing I recall is to have had the good fortune of eating with him several times at the Odyssey diner, his home away from home. He ate there so many times, he could have been a cook. Those simple moments, such as that,  were good for me and what means the most in life.

I will miss you Uncle David.

Love,

Randy
