Nicholas Napolitano, Jr.

As I was packing up my college dorm last week, I came across a pile of bags that I had collected over the course of the school year. They were neatly folded in a pile alongside my desk. I stopped, and a smile immediately crossed my face when I thought “my Great Grandma taught me how to do that.” If anyone does not know my Great Grandma, she was notorious for saving bags. I then took the bags, and got rid of them, as I thought of my Grandma Nap walking into my dorm, telling me “what do you need all these bags for?” As I waited in the hospital room this past Sunday, I felt as if God was showing me so much. This past year at college, I have felt myself grow closer to Christ, which I believe has caused me to greatly appreciate and realize what an impact my Great Grandmother’s presence has had on my life, and for our family as a whole. In Philippians, Paul writes, “join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.” (Philippians 3:17) My Great Grandmother fully lived a life dedicated to the Lord. Before I was even born into this world, she was praying for me. Then she consistently prayed for me as I would enter a new area in life, from preschool to college. Whenever I would visit, she would always talk about the Lord, whether it was her telling stories about the times she held Church at her house, to how the world was getting more and more distant from Christ. One of my last memories of her is spending Easter with us, and saying a prayer before we ate. As I stood in the hospital room, realizing she had left this world, it hit me, what just happened was what Paul talks about with Timothy. She fought the good fight, and she had now finished the race. My Great Grandmother was now standing before God, hearing the words “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” How humbling that must be to hear from the Creator of the universe. I know for myself, that her passing served as a reminder that nothing else matters in this life other than living it fully for Christ, as she did. I know she wouldn’t want this day to be just about her, but about her savior, Jesus Christ, and what He has done for each one of us. At college, I would talk to people who were part of the Bentley Christian Fellowship, and tell them how my family lives close by, and how I’m so close with many of my extended family members. But what they found to be truly unique was that my family members were Christian. And I stopped, and started to realize how blessed our family is, and how God has drawn all of us to Him, through her example. How many families can say that? We all know the truth, praise God, and should remain focused on that goal, as did my Great Grandmother. If we take anything away from today, we should reflect on the life my Great Grandmother lived, and how she lived it completely for Christ. And also remember, that even though she has departed from this Earth, for us, it is never a goodbye, it is always a see you later. Praise God, and God bless. I love you Great Grandma.
