Obituary for Robert C. McMahon

Robert C. McMahon
Robert C. McMahon, 67, of Eastchester, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 7th, 2022, surrounded by his adoring family. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne; his four beloved children, Mary (Christopher Burkhart), Christopher (Rebecca Brown), Laura, and Eileen; his three siblings, Francis (Patti), Peggy, and John (Cathy); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends. He is predeceased by his mother, Mary Canny McMahon; his aunt, Theresa Canny; his brother, Brian McMahon; his beloved niece Jennifer Jennings; and his cherished dog, Rory Patrick.

Robert was a proud Irish Bronx boy—born and raised in Highbridge, where he attended Sacred Heart School. A lifelong Yankees fan, Robert spent many days toning his calves while selling beer at nearby Yankee Stadium. After graduating from Cardinal Spellman, Robert ventured up to Poughkeepsie to attend Marist College, where he spent his mornings on the Hudson River as part of the crew team and his nights making lasting memories with his lifelong friends.

Following graduation, Robert spent many summers with his future wife and friends enjoying happy days in Hampton Bays including trips to the Boardy Barn among other adventures.

Robert attended New York Law School following in his older brother, John’s, footsteps. While studying for his bar exam in the library, he bumped into his future wife, Anne, and asked her to be his wedding date . . . and the rest is history. Robert and Anne celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 2021, a Hawaiian-themed backyard bash with their children where they listened to “Tiny Bubbles” while reminiscing about their Hawaiian honeymoon. Robert’s love for Anne never faded; he was amused by her shenanigans until the very end.

Robert had a successful career as an attorney. He started his career at Liberty Mutual in Eastchester, where he also bought his first home. For the last 20 years, Robert worked at Barry McTiernan & Moore, where he made many wonderful friends and was known by his colleagues to always “have a smile and a story.”

Robert’s most cherished role in life was being a father to his four “crazytown” children (and dog). He spent endless hours shuttling his children to sporting events, school functions, friends’ houses, trains, airports, etc. He rooted them on at their many sporting events and always had a word of advice ready (“keep your eye on the ball”), whether they wanted it or not. Robert was a soccer coach, t-ball coach, and basketball coach—always prepared with a cooler of ice-cold CapriSuns.

Robert loved exploring all corners of the United States, traveling to nearly 40 states with his family on numerous road trips. He was a professional Uber driver for his family (5 stars) and a human GPS who insisted on telling anyone who would listen about the best route to take and the expected traffic conditions.

Robert took so much joy in providing for his family and others, always ready to offer a helping hand, a word of advice, or a cold drink. As one friend succinctly put it: “He knew everything, but wasn’t a know-it-all.” He loved grilling for his family, usually cooking enough food to feed a football team. Leaving the house without a coffee and bagel was not permitted under his watch.

His simplest joys in life were listening to the Yankees in his backyard after a long day of yard work; walks with his dog, Rory, on the Lake Isle golf course; a hot cup of coffee; and sitting by the fireplace with his wife and kids (preferably while the Giants were winning).

Robert was a devout Catholic and longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Scarsdale.
