Obituary for Peggy J. Billadello (Colangelo)

Peggy J. (Colangelo) Billadello passed away peacefully at home into the arms of our Lord on October 23. Peggy was born on July 17, 1920, in Greenwich Village to Italian-immigrant parents Rocco and Giovanna Colangelo. Unusual for her time, Peggy graduated Hunter High School and Hunter College in New York City. She married Joseph Billadello in 1948. In addition to raising a family in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, she excelled as a public school teacher, obtained a Master's Degree in Education, and was a member of the honor society Kappa Delta Pi. Never losing touch with her heritage, she cooked traditional Italian-American feasts on the holidays to the delight of her many guests. Some of her other talents and interests included knitting, crocheting, writing, and politics. Eventually she moved to rural Milford, PA, where she enjoyed a long and successful retirement filled with volunteer and leadership positions with many community organizations. For many years, she wrote a weekly column of timely senior citizen news for the town newspaper. Peggy was proud of her brilliant son, Dr. Joseph J. Billadello, who was a Professor of Medicine and Director at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Later in life, she moved to Eastchester to be near her daughter. She was thrilled to spend time with her new great granddaughter. This past July she celebrated her 100th birthday with great joy. Peggy was doing well and staying current up until a few weeks before she passed. Throughout her long and accomplished life, she filled ours with happiness, love, and laughter. She was kind, generous, strong, lively, friendly, intelligent, positive in her attitude and progressive in her outlook. Hers was a life of service, placing the needs of others first. Peggy is predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Joseph, and her son, Joseph John. She is survived by her daughter Joan Eve Quinn, son-in law Thomas J. Quinn, daughter-in-law Dr. Guadalupe Sanchez, granddaughter Dr. Laura Nicole Billadello, grandson Dr. Michael De Vita, and great granddaughter Julia. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, which will be live-streamed on the church website for those who can't attend. She will be buried at Calverton National Cemetery. Peggy is dearly loved, missed, and remembered. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Washington University Fund for Adults with Congenital Heart Disease; The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation; or the Pike County Humane Society in Shohola, PA.

To Joan and Tom: I am very saddened when I heard of your mom's passing. She did live a very long life. I hope she is at peace now.
