Obituary for Joseph Altavilla

Joseph Altavilla fondly known as Joey or Sonny, age 92, a parishioner at Annunciation Church, a resident of Crestwood, New York for forty-eight years passed away on June 13, 2021 at the Enclave at Rye in Port Chester, New York. Joseph, son of Jenny and Sylvester Altavilla was born on March 6, 1929 in Bronx, New York. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School. He was married to his lovely wife of more than seventy years, Ann Altavilla (Alessi) on December 2, 1950 at St. Anthony’s Church in the Bronx, New York.

He started his career as a furniture refinisher and continued to stain and refinish furniture as a hobby and later worked in the tire and auto industry at Westchester Tire Company in White Plains, New York. He enjoyed boxing in his younger years, bowling in a league, loved the classic movies, listening to many different genres of music and visiting with friends and neighbor who were recovering from different illnesses. He was an enthusiastic watcher all different type of sports but he was especially proud of maintaining his lush green lawn. He loved vacationing at Cape Cod and taking cruises. He was an avid pet lover and his King Charles Cavilier, Charlie Brown survives him.

He was devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife Ann (Cookie), four children, Joanne Lalli of Kings Park, Long Island, Joel Altavilla of Yonkers, New York, Charisse Ann Kellar of Ringwood, New Jersey, Lisa Girandola of Mahopac, New York, eight grandchildren, Corinne Shalewitz, Matthew Lalli, Joel Altavilla, Jr, Christine Gill, Elizabeth Marra, Julianne Kellar, Alicia Girandola, Nicholas Girandola and his seven great grandchildren, Jack Gill, Julian Altavilla, Alessi Altavilla, Noah Gill, Guilia Shalewitz, Sofia Shalewitz and Daniel Listapad, two son-in-laws Patrick Kellar and John Girandola and his daughter-in-law Milagros Altavilla. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. His five sisters, Millie, Josie, Tina, Rose and Grace, one brother, Joseph and his beloved son-in-law Corradino Lalli predeceased him.

Visitation will be held at the Westchester Funeral Home located in Eastchester, New York from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Annunciation Church in Yonkers, New York followed by his interment at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.
