Obituary for Joseph Alfonzetti

Alfonzetti, Joseph, a resident of Tuckahoe, NY, peacefully died on October 13, 2012. He was 88. Joseph was born on February 26, 1924 in Scilla, Provincia di Reggio Calabria, to Giovanna Fava and Domenico Alfonzetti. He married his beloved wife who lived in the same part of town known as "La Chianalea" and were married on January 23, 1955 at the Chiesa di San Rocco in Scilla. Joseph came to Tuckahoe in 1955 and lived with his uncle as he worked hard to prepare for his life in the United States. He returned to Scilla and with his wife, son and daughter, they returned to Tuckahoe in 1960. He was an incredible landscaper and contractor and his beautiful handiwork will always live on. As a young man, Joseph was in the Italian Merchant Marines and lived to tell of his many stories at sea. The sea was his life, as he came from a long line of fishermen, especially swordfishing, which he did as a young man, carrying the tradition of his ancestors. He enjoyed the love of his children and the grandchildren and enjoyed many trips to Montauk and of course his beloved Scilla. He will always be remembered for his remarkable strength and for the great love he had for his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Grazia, his beloved children Domenic and his wife Kathleen, JoAnne and her husband Larry, Victoria, and Maria and her husband Hugo. Nonno will be dearly missed by his beloved grandchildren Christina, Katie, James, Daniela, Julia, Adriana and Marc. Joseph is also survived by his sisters Maria Pontillo and Fortunata Nostro and by his brother Antonino Alfonzetti of Scilla, Italy as well as his brothers Orazio and Michelangelo Alfonzetti of Montreal, Canada. Joseph also leaves his many dear nieces and nephews in Italy and Canada. We would like to thank our family, friends and clergy for all their love, prayers and support during this difficult time. We extend our gratitude to the staff at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, NY for taking such wonderful care of Joseph. The dignity and respect that was given to him will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Assumption Church, 53 Winterhill Rd., Tuckahoe NY 10707.
