Obituary for Florence DiStefano

Florence DiStefano
Florence DiStefano passed peacefully, to join many loved ones gone before her, on Sunday, February 11th 2018. She was preceded by her parents, Antonio Panico and Fiomena (Polio), her husband, Michael Macri, her son, Joseph Macri, her brother, Salvatore, her sisters Marie, Ann, Lucille, and Josephine, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Dominick, Pat, Terry and Nancy, and all of their beloved spouses.

She is survived by her sister, Rose, her son, Michael and daughter-in-law Catherine, her daughter, Kathy and her life-partner Bob. She was the proud grandma of Lauren (Hank Palestrini) and Michael (Pamela) Macri and Frank and Nicole DeRuggiero. She cherished her title of great-grandma to Taylor Lauren and Henry Michael Palestrini. She was widely regarded as the “favorite Aunt” by all of her nieces and nephews and has many dear friends and relatives who will miss her immensely.

Born in 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, she left school at the age of 15 to go work and support her family. She had an assortment of jobs from packaging Beechnut Gum to the assembly line at a glove factory. She had a vivid memory and could recite age-old stories that would make us laugh no matter how many times we heard them. She loved the beach, roller skating, dancing and singing.

Family was unequivocally her most prized possession. She lived the last 23 years of her life with her family in Westchester, New York where she belonged to a bowling league, spent countless hours crocheting and cooked dinner nightly for her family and anyone who might stop by.

She enjoyed learning so very much and even at 93 years old, still fondly remembered the years of schooling she was able to have. She loved reading, writing and all things outer-space. We will think of her a little extra every night there is an especially bright, full-moon. We intend to honor her memory by helping young girls not only shoot for the stars, but to study them and advance their educations to become incredible women like she was. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to the ’Let Girls Learn Fund or one of the organizations she supported generously all her life, ’’St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital and ’Mother Angelicas Eternal World Television Network .

As her spiritual guide Mother Angelica has said, “God wants you to be in the world, but so different from the world that you will change it. Get cracking.” We have been blessed beyond measure to have had her strength, wisdom and love in our lives and our worlds are certainly changed.
