Sharon (Shaffer) Harden

Doug was the only son of Sgt. Walter W. Miller and wife Cleo (Friesner) Miller. His sister, Gwen Miller Shaffer is my mother. I am Sharon Shaffer Harden and my son's name is Evan Michael Hames. Doug was our favorite Uncle and a total scream to be around. He graduated from Cerro Gordo High School in 1966 and after attended business college in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1968 he answered his country's call and enlisted in the United States Army, serving until 1970. Pinochle was practically a family religion and Doug loved to play. Cooking was art to him and he earned the nickname 'Julian Child'. Fishing and hunting were other family obsessions and after Grandpa Miller died, Uncle Doug took his place teaching me. The last thing Uncle Doug said to me was "love you", and I responded the same. I try to remember this when I think of him. I arranged a memorial service for Uncle Doug this past Friday, June 25th. We cried but also laughed--his antics as a teenager were remembered. He was a bad boy! Family from both sides, the Friesners and Millers, are saddened to lose one so close. Among the attendants at the service were old friends of Doug's and our family. They will greatly miss him. I cannot recall the author, but this small saying will always remind me of Doug: Every man dies, but not every man lives. Uncle Doug LIVED. We will love you always and miss you, Unc. -Your Fav Niece
