Obituary for Celsa Landaburu

Celsa Livia Landaburu, a beloved mother and grandmother who came from Argentina to the United States permanently in the 1970s, died Friday of natural causes. She was 90.

Celsa, an elegant, strong-willed and fun-loving woman, was fiercely protective of her family and loved bridge, tennis and life. Her children and grandchildren were the focal point of her long life.

She was born on August 28, 1927 in Cordoba, Argentina, the daugher of Celsa and Ricardo Arvelo. She attended college in Argentina and became a biochemist, before coming to the United States in the mid-1950s to do research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Celsa married Ricardo Landaburu, whom she had first met in Argentina, in Ann Arbor in 1954. The couple would return to Argentina, where they raised four children before returning to the United States permanently to live in Michigan and Westchester County in the1970s.

Celsa instilled a sense of learning and loyalty in her family, while displaying a razor-sharp wit, a mastery of bridge and a life-long interest in tennis, politics and news. In her later years, she would embrace technology and play bridge with others throughout the world on her iPad.

She is survived by her son, Ricardo of Arizona, and daughters Ana of Marietta, GA, Claudia of Scarsdale, N.Y. and Margarita of Tuckahoe, N.Y., two sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law. She also is survived by eight grandchildren, Katie, Jennifer, Kristin, Craig, John, Danielle, Ronny and Ricky.

She was predeceased by her husband, two sisters and her granddaughter Natalie Celsa.

She was the matriarch of her extended family and cherished her time with her children and grandchildren. Determined and willful, she left her rehabilitation center for a night in late August with family for a dinner on City Island, where she was feted to celebrate her 90th birthday. Elegant as always, she beamed the entire evening, surrounded by her family.
