Benito “Benny” Protano, a longtime resident of Mamaroneck passed away on May 27, 2016 at the age of 81. He was born in Roccasecca, Italy on May 19, 1935 to the late Bernardo and Bernarda (DeSantis) Protano. Benny emigrated from Italy at the age of 19 and was a hardworking man who enjoyed using his hands to help others. He worked as a tile-setter and was the owner of Woodbine Tile in Mamaroneck until his retirement. He was a member of the Alessandro Manzoni Lodge # 258 Order of Sons of Italy in Mamaroneck for over 50 years. He is survived by his five children, Carol Ann Canonico (Anthony), John Protano, Laura Sprovieri (Larry), Diane Knowles (Brennen), and Katherine Imperiale (Anthony). Benny is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, Amy, Katie, A.J., Ben, Michael, Larry, Jamie, Valerie, Alexa, Nicholas, Camryn and Danielle, his long time companion Irma Tramontelli, a brother Franco, a sister Dora, and many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife Rose Protano, a daughter Bernadette “Della” Protano, and a sister Lilliana Abbatecola.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday May 31, 2016 from 4 - 8 PM at the WESTCHESTER FUNERAL HOME, INC. 190 Main St. Eastchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday June 1, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St. Vito’s R.C. Church in Mamaroneck. Entombment to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale.
