Obituary for John T. Fix, Jr.

John T. Fix Jr., passed away on May 17, 2022 with wife and family at his side. He was born in Bronxville NY, at Lawrence Hospital on December 2nd 1929 to John T. Fix and Mary Brundage Fix. John graduated from Immaculate Conception School where he was an altar boy and attended Iona Prep where he played football while also working at the family hardware store, Cornell Brothers.
In 1947, he joined the Naval Reserve for 2 years, followed by 4 years of active duty in the US Air Force during the Korean War. John became a radar operator on SB17 search and rescue aircraft and had many missions searching for downed aircraft in the Aleutian Islands. He loved telling stories of the missions and a few years ago he enjoyed climbing aboard a B17 at Westchester Airport for a seat at the radar station once again. His final two years of service were in Houston and Cape Cod where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He turned down that promotion and returned to “fly-ins” status so that he could assist his father in managing Cornell’s Hardware.
John was very committed to his family, their business and the community with most of his days spent helping people with their hardware store repair needs. His specialty was finding the oddball light bulbs. He was a Charter Member of The Eastchester Rotary Club started in 1964 and served two terms as president and 6 terms as treasurer. He truly epitomized the Rotary motto “service above self”. He took special pride in the “Gift of Life” program, where children from developing countries are provided life saving cardiac surgery in the USA. He would meet the children at the airport and shuttle them to the sponsoring family. He was proud of the lives saved through the Rotary’s ongoing support of this program. For 9 years he served the Eastchester/Tuckahoe Boy Scout Community as Cub Chairman, Troop Chairman and Assistant Scoutmaster. In the early 70’s, John received the Bronze Pelican Award for his service to scouting. He served two terms as president of the Eastchester/Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce, many years as a board member and was selected as Person of the Year in 1996 for his service to the community. He served 7 years on the Board of Directors of the NYS Retail Hardware Association and as President in ‘77-’78. In 1992 John received the Golden Hammer Award for 50 years of service in the hardware industry. He retired from Cornell’s in 2010 at 80 years old!
John loved history and would bring war books with him to Rotary meetings to engage whomever was interested. He loved gardening and spent summers in Springs, East Hampton, tying his tomato plants to the stakes, clamming and watching birds at his popular bird bath. For many years, John traveled throughout the world with his Mary, his wife of 63 years and together they visited five continents.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, his children John T. Fix III (Judy), Mary Beth Fix Wellington, Michael Fix, and Kate Fix (Jason Summers); his siblings Mary Linehan, Joan Taylor, Nancy Croeber, and his 6 grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brother Thomas Fix.
