Obituary for Angelo Campanile

Yonkers - Angelo Campanile died peacefully at home on September 10, 2018 after a heroic battle against cancer. His final days were spent with his children and grandchildren. He was 82.

Angelo was the fourth of five sons born to Leonardo and Isabella Campanile in Cassano Delle Murge, Italy. He often reminisced about working as a child in the olive groves and almond orchards surrounding his small town. In the mid-60’s he left everything he loved to seek his fortunes in the United States. Shortly after arriving in New York, he learned a new trade and became a carpenter. He married Jacqueline Lamonte of the Bronx in 1968. They ultimately settled in Yonkers and raised three children: Guy, a Producer at “60 Minutes”, Anthony, a Yonkers Police Officer and Christina, the Director of Communications for the City of Yonkers. Jacqueline predeceased Angelo in February of this year.

Angelo, like many immigrants of his generation, worked six and half days a week to provide for his family. Sunday was his favorite day because it featured visits with his cousins. Their boisterous meals were the stuff of family legend, complimented with passionate conversation, delicacies that reminded them of home and laughter until they cried.

Years later, Angelo could finally afford to find time for the finer things in life. These included visits to his hometown in Italy and winters at his condo in Delray Beach, FL. One of his favorite pastimes was taking long strolls on the beach. He was also equally content to sit in his backyard and slowly sip a glass of homemade wine as he surveyed the progress of his garden.

The public best knew Angelo for his annual portrayal of Christopher Columbus at the Yonkers Columbus Day Parade. More than a decade of successful navigations of the Santa Maria on the streets of Yonkers earned him induction into the Yonkers Columbus Day Celebration Committee Hall of Fame. But what mattered most to Angelo was the satisfaction and joy he experienced when he was with his grandchildren: Angelina, John, Julianna, Nicole, Olivia and Peter. He viewed them as the most valuable dividends of a life well lived and a legacy stronger than anything he ever built as a carpenter.

Angelo’s affection also extended to his children's spouses: Dr. Susan Pizzuto Campanile, Karen Gizzo Campanile and Matthew Gilmartin. He was as proud of them as he was his own children.

A wake will be held for Angelo Campanile at Westchester Funeral Home Thursday, September 13 from 6pm-9pm and Friday, September 14 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Annunciation Church at 10am on Saturday, September 15 followed by entombment at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale.
