Obituary for Angelina M. Vernillo

Angelina Mary (nee D’Amelio) Vernillo, 98, of Eastchester passed away on August 31, 2021 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. Born on August 11, 1923 to the late Henry and Carmela (nee Filippelli) D’Amelio in New York, New York.

Angelina is survived by her daughters Joan Vernillo and Karen (Joseph J.) Puglia, her grandchildren Kimberly (James) Foote and Joseph M. (Danielle) Puglia and her great grandchildren Elizabeth Foote and Michael and Matthew Puglia.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 72 years, Michael L. Vernillo and her dear sisters Frances Santangelo and Fay Squitieri and her cherished brother William J. D’Amelio.

Angelina was orphaned at age 13. She and her siblings lived in East Harlem with her grandparents. She graduated the High School of Trades for Girls, the first women’s vocational school in the United States. There she learned to sew and craft outfits, for which her daughters were later very grateful. She created exquisite dresses and could still make a hem in her 98th year! After her girls went off to school, she worked in Hammacher-Schlemmer on East 57th street in NYC gift wrapping for the elite of the city. She could make an exquisite package with bows of satin and grosgrain ribbons. As with most Italian mothers, she could whip up eggplant parmigiana sandwiches for picnic outings. She loved the beach, the sand and shells and especially the sun. Her favorite trips were to Las Vegas, the Southwest and especially anywhere in Florida. But her very best trip was Walt Disney World. Her life was full with her family and her dearest friends for over 70 years, Yolanda and Millie.

Many thanks and much gratitude for years of dedicated service to Barbara McFarlane for her loving care of “Momma”Angie. Also love to Je’nel, Tracey and Edith.

Although we will all miss her lovely smile and her sparkling blue eyes, we know she is in the bosom of Our Lord with her dear Mikey.

In lieu of flowers friends may contribute to Calvary Hospital at 1740 Eastchester Road Bronx, New York 10461. https://fund.calvaryhospital.org/
