Obituary for Zlatan Kikic

Our loving husband, devoted father, and adoring “grampa” Zlatan Kikic, 70, of Eastchester, NY, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2021 after a long and courageous battle with illness.
He was born and raised in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A brilliant and talented mind with great affinity for mathematics, he graduated with honors from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, with both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering. In addition to his work as a power plant commissioning engineer in the power industry, he also worked as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the Ruhr Universitaet Bochum, Germany. He retired from Consolidated Edison after a rich career spanning 42 years and multiple countries.
He spent many focused hours deep in thought with his trusty clipboard in hand researching and designing electronic circuits and devices, but the part that he loved the most was when he could solder, test, and measure. The scent of soldering wire is forever etched in our memories. A chess master in his youth, he loved to play the game especially with his grandchildren, always telling us all to think two steps ahead in life. He was known for his sharp wit and was often quoted for his advice and wisdom among family and friends. He instilled his impeccable values and work ethics in all of us and he always inspired us to strive, learn, and evolve. He loved us all fiercely and unconditionally.
He was married to his best friend and the love of his life, Bozica Kikic, for 47 wonderful years. They were inseparable from the day they met in 6th grade. They taught us all we know about love, respect, and devotion.
He is survived by his daughter Sanda O’Neil and her husband Richard O’Neil of Wethersfield, CT and his son Oliver Kikic and his wife Annie Kikic of Queens, NY. His greatest joy and treasure were always his grandchildren Tristan and Stefan O’Neil and Nikola and Nina Kikic.
The family thanks the compassionate and capable teams of the Calvary Hospice, Bronx, NY, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, and the White Plains Hospital, White Plains, NY for their expertise and care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 388 Upper Oakwood Ave, Elmira, NY 14903. He supported this organization for many years, as he always sought to lead by example and eradicate hunger.
Westchester Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. All arrangements will be private.
