Obituary for Virginia D. Bahr

Crestwood - Virginia Dorothy Bahr passed away suddenly on January 16, 2022. The daughter of Henry Arthur Bahr (Harry) and Anna Hermine Klein Bahr, Ginny was born June 23, 1927 in the Bronx. She grew up in the Crestwood section of Yonkers with sisters, Gladys Irene and Evelyn Louise and brother, Henry Arthur. Her father died at an early age, leaving her mother to raise the four children. An outstanding athlete in high school and college years, Ginny was named Top Female Athlete at Roosevelt High School, Yonkers, NY Class of 1945. She excelled in field hockey, baseball, basketball and volleyball. Ginny graduated Centenary Junior College, Hackettstown, NJ in 1949 and received numerous accolades including President of Delta Sigma Sigma Sorority, President of Phi Iota - Honorary Leadership Society, Captain of the All-Star Hockey Team and Captain of the All-Star Volleyball Team. According to her senior yearbook, Ginny had the “best imitation of a seal”. Ginny completed business school at Berkeley College where she learned shorthand and typing. She worked several years at Curtis Publishing before starting in the advertising business at J. Walter Thompson now known as Wunderman Thompson in 1951, just in time to receive a much-needed holiday paycheck. Ginny began as a receptionist and moved to executive secretary for many of the company’s Vice Presidents and CEOs. Ginny worked in support roles on various accounts during her tenure at the agency including Ford, PanAm, Shell and Rolex. She also ran the company blood drives and personally gave more than 50 pints over the years. Ginny was a Conrail/Metro North train commuter and walked back and forth to the Crestwood train station year after year. In later years she accepted rides to and from the station from wonderful neighbors. At the age of 93, and at a transition to remote working due to the covid-19 pandemic, Ginny retired after 69 years of service. She is the longest-serving employee at JWT/Wunderman Thompson and is credited as the behind-the-scenes force that has kept the agency going over the years. In a tribute to her dedicated career, Ginny was given the title “Honorary Chairperson of Wunderman Thompson” and was featured in numerous media publications including Advertising Age, People Magazine, Ad Week and Business Insider. Ginny is a lifelong member of Asbury Crestwood United Methodist Church, from baptism to confirmation, adding her strong alto voice to the choir all through the years. Her choir friends were her biggest pals and champions. Ginny was a supporter of the Asbury Summer Theatre and did volunteer work cutting vines along the Bronx River Parkway and helping at the Bronx Zoo. Ginny is predeceased by her parents, sister Gladys Bahr Spence, brother Henry Bahr, nieces Nancy Spence Breon and Holly Nichols and nephew Henry Bahr, III. She is survived by dear sister Evelyn Bahr Nichols and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Ginny familiarly known as Chum in childhood days and into adult years by her family, was a force for good, always giving, incredibly selfless, who cared more for others than herself. No distance was too far to drive and visit family. Ginny enjoyed times in Boonville NY and Cape Cod and was happiest tending her garden. Her geraniums were her pride and joy all times of the year. A memorial service is planned at Asbury Crestwood United Methodist Church 167 Scarsdale Road, Tuckahoe, NY on Sunday, January 30 at 3pm following covid guidelines. Masks are required. Live streaming available at asburycrestwood.net. A Celebration of Life service will be held in June 2022.
