Obituary for Theresa Asphar (Asphar)

Theresa (Terry) Asphar was born on February 28, 1918, in Sliema, Malta to Violet (neé
Pace Bardon) and Alfred Asphar. In 1954 Terry left the island nation to join her brothers
who had emigrated to New York so that she might care for one who was ailing. After
her brother’s recovery, Terry remained on. She became an American citizen and worked
hard alongside her brothers to become an integral part of a corporate family business.
Terry studied painting at Malta’s Government School of Art after the 2nd World War
under the renowned Chevalier Emvin Cremona. Terry was an accomplished artist and
musician. She held the position of President of the Mt. Vernon Art Association for years
and actively continued her beloved painting throughout her life. Her oil paintings and
sculptures were prize winners and grace homes around the globe. Terry’s piano playing
brought joy for decades to family and friends.
Terry was well versed in all of the arts, a voracious reader with a penchant for the
American West, a poet and an inexhaustibly, patient “teacher” of all things.
At the tender age of 85, Terry translated and self-published a book of over 700 pages, on
“The Towns and Villages of Malta”.
Three generations of family and friends have been blessed by Terry’s joyful spirit,
gentleness of soul and generosity of heart. She is survived by countless relations, all of
whom will continue to be inspired by her legacy of courage, love, honesty, empathy,
and humility.
We love you, Terry!
