Obituary for Suzanne O'Rourke

Suzanne F. O’Rourke of Eastchester, NY, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2022. She was born December 9, 1942 in Mount Vernon, NY, the daughter of John Paul and Mary (Santalahti) Flaherty, and graduated from A.B. Davis High School in 1960. She attended SUNY, College at Buffalo, majoring in Home Economics, got her teacher certification at Lehman College, and earned a master’s degree in Special Education from The College of New Rochelle. She taught at Isaac E. Young Junior High School in New Rochelle from 1974 through 2005.

Her passions included tennis, photography, birding, and travel. For many years, she played in the United States Tennis Association amateur league, taught photography and contributed some of her work to naturalist authors and the Cornell University Ornithology Lab, and regularly traversed the country and the world adding to her life list of birds and catalogue of beautiful photographs.

She is survived by her husband, Francis X. O’Rourke Jr., and her son Francis X. O’Rourke III, both from Eastchester, and her daughter and son-in-law, Valerie O’Rourke Kitts and Howard Andrew Kitts, of Sabillasville, MD. Sue is also survived by several nieces and nephews in the United States and many cousins in Finland.
