Obituary for Richard S. Sullivan

On June 28, 2020, Richard Stephen Sullivan passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 86. Richard was born October 29, 1933, in the Bronx, NY to John and Florence (nee Sharp) Sullivan. He attended Mount Saint Michael Academy and later went to work at Consolidated Edison. It was there he met Patricia Ryan, whom he married on May 4, 1957, in Yonkers, NY. They went on to raise their family in the Bronx where Rich was an active member of St. Frances of Rome parish. They later moved to Yonkers. Rich proudly served in the Army National Guard in the early 1960’s.
Rich was an energetic and industrious man. At the age of 50, he completed the NYC Marathon. In addition to his career at Con Edison, where he retired after 40 years of service, Rich had a tax preparation business up until his death. His long- time clients regarded him as a trusted friend. He was an accomplished carpenter and gardener and took pride in his beautifully landscaped yard where he spent the final weeks of his life surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Family was most important to Rich. Summer vacations for over 50 years on LBI with his family, including surf fishing and crabbing, were favorite memories. He was an avid fan of the NY Giants, the NY Mets and the Kentucky Derby. Later in life, he and Pat enjoyed traveling and attending their grandchildren’s sporting and school events. After’s Pat’s death, Rich joined the Rotary Club of Eastchester and later became a Gift of Life board member. The GOL program provides lifesaving cardiac treatment to needy children worldwide. Rich’s role was to provide moral support and transportation for the child and parent before and after the hospitalization. He became the GOL “grandfather’ to children from Kosovo, Trinidad, Haiti, Belize, Ecuador and Nigeria. For the work that he cherished, Rich received two Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow awards.
Predeceased by his wife, Pat, in 2012, Rich is survived by his four children: Kathleen Pappas (Robert) of Yorktown Heights, NY; Patricia Black (Eugene) of Brewster, NY; Jack Sullivan of Bronxville, NY; and Kerry Sullivan (Kelly Kischak) of Carmel, NY; along with his eight grandchildren: Kristen Pappas, Brian Pappas (Madeleine), Matthew Pappas, Daniel Black (Welma), Molly Black, Meaghan Black, Claire Kischak and Kieran Kischak; and three great grandchildren: Lucy and Jack Pappas and Nina Black.
