Obituary for Phillip S. Mazzella

Phillip Silverio Mazzella passed suddenly on July 24, 2022 at the age of 55. On January 19th 1967, Phil was born to Diane Mazzella and Silverio M. Mazzella at Mt. Vernon Hospital and grew up in City Island. During his early years you would find him fishing and boating with his family and making memories that would he would pass on to his own family. He enjoyed the laid-back City Island life. He attended St. Mary’s Star of the Sea from Kindergarten to 8th grade and graduated Fordham Preparatory School. He enrolled in Manhattan College for Electrical Engineering but knew his true calling was serving his community. In 1993, he joined the NYPD for 5 years in the 49th Precinct in the Bronx. In February 1998, he was appointed to the FDNY where he served in many housed but finally made Ladder 128 his home. On September 11 2001, Phil was a first responder during the devastating attack on our country. He worked tirelessly at Ground Zero for several months with his fellow first responders to bring peace and humility to the victims. Eventually, he worked a detail in the Marine 4 Division, and was back doing what he loved, being on the water.

Phil was the eldest sibling to brother Paul Mazzella and sister Danielle Mazzella-D’Ambrosio. He had 2 beautiful boys, Gerard Mazzella and Jonathan Mazzella born on April 18th, 2002. They were his proudest accomplishments and like most fathers, his world revolved around them. He was a loving and devoted father. From coaching his son’s baseball games to becoming a Boy Scout Leader, he never passed on an opportunity to spend more time with his boys. Whether it was fishing on his boat, Double Trouble, or spending family vacations in one of their favorite places, Lake George, he continued to make lasting memories with his family.

Phil knew that his time at Ground Zero would eventually catch up to him. For years, he buried friends and fellow first responders who suffered from the devastating effects from that day. Phil eventually suffered from symptoms directly related to the effects of being a 9/11 first responder. His bravery, courage and service will never be forgotten.

Phil was a wonderful and loving brother, uncle, father and son. His vibrant personality, humor and contagious laugh (giggle) was something he was most memorable for. His hilarious stories and outgoing personality would light up any room.

Phil’s family will always be thankful for the laughs, memories, and family dinners shared with him. His sudden passing left a hole in all our hearts.
“If success attends my steps, honor and glory await my name- if defeat, still shall it be said we died like brave men, and conferred honor, even in death, on the American Name.”
