Obituary for Muriel S. Callahan

Muriel S.  Callahan
Muriel S. Callahan passed away peacefully at Calvary Hospital on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the age of 94. Muriel was born in the Bronx on December 20, 1923, to the late George and Ada Werdann. After graduating from Aquinas Hall High School in the Bronx, Muriel went on to work at New York Telephone, where one of her jobs was as a print model for its overseas newsletters during World War II. Muriel married John A. “Jack” Callahan on April 10, 1948 and they eventually settled in New Rochelle, New York, where they raised their family. Jack passed away in 2001. Muriel was an avid gardener and was known for her beautiful flower gardens. Muriel and Jack were founding parishioners and active volunteers at St. Pius X Church and School in Scarsdale. Muriel is survived by her sons, John (Lynn) of Tuckahoe, New York, and Rory of Annapolis, Maryland. She is the beloved grandmother to Andrew, Megan (Morgan), Kathryn and Caroline. Muriel was the oldest of, and was survived by, her four siblings, George, Adabelle “Ginger” (Malcom), Theodore and Mary Ellen (James). During her final years, Muriel resided at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Mount Vernon, New York, where her care managers, Mary and Patricia, provided her compassionate assistance. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 6, from 4-7pm at Westchester Funeral Home, 190 Main Street, Eastchester, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 7, at 10 am, at St. Pius X Church, 91 Secor Road, Scarsdale, New York, with internment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Hospital, 1740 Eastchester Road, Bronx, New York, 10461, or thru its website.
