Obituary for Dr. Michael Harrison Miller
It is Fall, Michael’s favorite season. The air is crisp, and the winds blow beautiful colored leaves as they dance and swirl onto the ground. All of nature seems to be at rest and going to sleep. So too with Dr. Michael H. Miller, who passed away, December 9, 2022, at the age of 80 years old, after long and difficult illnesses, lasting several years.

In his youth, while still in Medical School, Dr. Miller married Susan Daly of Mamaroneck, New York, so that she would have the best medical care available to her. That was Michael’s love and nature when caring for the sick. Sadly, Susan died at the tender age of 23 years old.

On the Winter Solstice, December 21, 1975, Michael again married artist Marcia D. Miller, his dearest wife of 47 years, and then, in the Spring, adopted her 4-year old daughter, Dorothy Anne.

Upon his completing an internship and medical residency at Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Miller enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War. There, he came to direct a MASH Unit in PHU BAI, taking care of both sides of the war-torn soldiers. He then returned to Montefiore Medical Center after his time in Vietnam, to complete his training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He rose to Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He saw patients for six months of the year and then next six months he was given a Laboratory to do the research he was interested in.

His research led him to focus on the theoretical uptake of antibiotics by human cells, the efficacy of these antibiotics and how they cross the cell barrier. Michael also did considerable research on the human eye and how best to treat serious eye infections. He loved his research, whatever it happened to be during those exciting years.

Dr. Miller enjoyed teaching his interns and residents: familiarly launching these young aspirants with the famous phrase, “May The Force Be With You.” Oftentimes, as he lectured internationally, his lectures would end with the same phrase. As I said, Michael loved his research.

From Einstein and Montefiore, Dr. Miller was recruited to be Chief of Infectious Diseases at Albany Medical Center and soon was asked to join the new Ordway Research Institute, not far from the hospital. He was given a Laboratory to continue his extensive research and publications in Infectious Diseases.

After 18 years in Albany, Dr. and Mrs. Miller returned to Westchester County, where he joined an Infectious Diseases private practice in the Hudson Valley. He tended to five hospitals in the area, and attained Stewardship in his field, thus having more control over the treatments of patients at Phelps Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Miller was devoted to all his patients and exemplified the highest standards and ethics in treating them. He believed that they were first and foremost in his mind; always remaining at the hospital where he was. Michael always had time to answer questions from interns, residents and doctors when asked, even at late hours after a hard day’s work.

Dr. Miller was truly a man with a mission, founded in a life of Science Exploration and the highest principles of patient care.

With his family, Dr. Miller enjoyed Opera, Symphony, Broadway Shows, playing tennis, riding horses, downhill skiing, and for 40 years, the family would vacation in the Outer Banks of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he enjoyed sailing, fly-tying, fly-fishing, saltwater fishing, and pastel drawing.

Dr. Miller leaves behind his beloved wife, Marcia, his daughter, Dorothy Anne, his grandson Shalev, his New Jersey family, his British family in the UK, as well as his loyal and beloved friends, his colleagues and his students carry his torch.
