Obituary for Michael Hausler

Michael Charles Hausler, a beloved brother, uncle and friend who always knew how to make everyone around him laugh, died on Janaury 19, 2024, in Yonkers, N.Y.
He was born in the Bronx on March 4, 1965 to Charles and Helen Hausler, the baby brother to his two sisters Ellen and Karen, who adored him. True to his hometown, he remained a lifelong fan of the Yankees, spending many a holiday dinner lauding and defending the clutchness of Derek Jeter.
His favorite food in the world was a simple egg sandwich, he could quote scenes from “The Flintstones” verbatim, and he had a passion for music, which he had a deep knowledge of. He particularly loved The Ramones, Lou Reed and R.E.M., and his family will never listen to those artists without thinking of him. Years ago, one of his sisters customized her ringtone so that when her brother called, the Ramones’ “We’re A Happy Family” would blare from her phone, which made him laugh and laugh.
He approached life with a sense of curiosity and humor, and would tell some of his most memorable stories during an otherwise normal dinner conversation: Like how, when he lived in San Francisco in the 1980s and '90s, he said he cleaned the house for the co-founder of Jefferson Airplane. Or the time he met R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe: “Yeah…interesting guy,” he’d say, before launching into a flawless impression that left everyone at the table in hysterics.
Most of all, though, Michael loved his family - his sisters, his cousin, his brothers-in-law - and he was an absolute natural in his role as uncle to his five nephews and one niece. He beamed with pride at everything they did, and supported and encouraged them at every turn. If he had more time, he surely would have done the same for his newest family member, his grandniece.
We’ll be thinking of him every day - and on Opening Day this spring, some devoted Mets fans in his family may even be secretly pulling for the Yanks. He will be missed terribly.

“You are the star tonight,

Your sun electric, outta sight.

Your light eclipsed the moon tonight.”

-R.E.M, 'Electrolite'
