Obituary for Maybelle Callender (Carmichael)

Maybelle Alberta Carmichael Callender, 96, passed away on October 1, 2021 in Tuckahoe, NY of natural causes. The daughter of James Carmichael and Grace Harry Carmichael, she grew up in Franklin Park, NJ. Moving to Greenwich Village in 1944, she graduated from the Barbizon School and the Feagin School of Dramatic Art, performed in theater and live television and was an office manager.

While attending NYU, she met and married Wesley P. Callender, Jr. in 1952 and soon moved to Tuckahoe, becoming parents to three sons. They quickly became involved in the Eastchester community, helping to found the Eastchester Historical Society and volunteering with many local community groups. Her life was devoted to caring for her sons and her community and she always found the time, energy and love to nurture both.

Widowed in 1968, Maybelle returned to the business world to support her young family. A corporate treasurer, Maybelle retired after fifteen years and then spent sixteen years as the Tuckahoe Court Clerk. Her active civic involvement continued throughout her working years and into her mid-eighties. She was on the Tuckahoe Library Board for decades, was a trustee and treasurer at Asbury Methodist Church, led local civic and historical groups, and even volunteered with the Girls Scouts.

Maybelle Callender is survived by her sons, Wesley (Pat and granddaughter Anna), Kenneth, and Roy (Denise and Matthew). A fourth son, James, died shortly after birth. Her brother, Edward, and sister, Isabelle, predeceased her.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 9, at 2:00 PM at Asbury Methodist Church, 167 Scarsdale Road, Yonkers, NY. Interment will follow in the church’s columbarium. Attendees are requested to wear masks and to socially distance in keeping with the times. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Friends of the Tuckahoe Library or a charity of choice is suggested.
