Obituary for Sr. Mary Alice Howley

Sister Mary Alice Howley, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Dr. George M. and Eileen Flynn Howley. She was born in New York City on the Feast of St. Anthony in 1935. As she was ready to start school, her family moved to Pelham Manor and she began her love of Sisters of St. Francis of Hastings as a student at St. Catherine School, Pelham. Her High School years were spent as a boarder at St. Joseph Academy, Brentwood, Long Island as her mother had done before her. Alice finished two years at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. before entering the Hastings Franciscans in January, 1955 and receiving the name Sr. Dolorita on her Reception Day, August 8, 1955. After first Profession on July 14, 1957, she taught 7th grade at Holy Name of Jesus School, New Rochelle. Alice often said of her next Mission, "You either loved it or you didn't", her years 1959 to 1970 teaching English to 5 to 8 graders at St. Aloysius School, Mt. Loretto, Staten Island proved without a doubt how Alice felt. From 1970 to 1979, Sister Alice taught English to Juniors and Seniors at St. Clare Academy, Hastings as well as acting as Assistant Principal. During these years she also served as Director of Sister Candidates and on going Formation for the Community. She studied for CPE at Bellevue Hospital in NYC from 1977-79 and was a Pastoral Care Associate at St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, NY as well as Director of Mission Effectiveness from 1992 until her retirement in 2014. Sister served the Community of the Sisters of St. Francis, Hastings as a Council member 1999-03 as third councilor and Re-elected as first councilor in 2003. Sister Alice is survived by her sister Eunice and brothers George (Bobby) and Fred. She was predeceased by her older sister Grace and youngest brother Edward. Sister Alice will always be remembered for her hearty laugh and her dry sense of humor. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday October 26, 2021 at 10 AM at St. Catherine's Church in Pelham at 10 AM. Interment of her cremated remains will follow at Mt.
