Obituary for Mary Aileen Popoli

Sr. Mary Aileen Popoli, 92, of Mount Vernon died on October 19, 2020. Sr. Aileen was born on November 1, 1927 in the Bronx to Leo and Loretta Cicoria Popoli. She is survived by her sister Jennie McDonald. Her brothers pre deceased her, Anthony, Leon and Frank Popoli.
Sr. Aileen entered the Sisters of St. Francis, Hastings on Hudson October 4, 1949 and was professed on July 14, 1952 and made final vows on July 14, 1955. Sister began her teaching ministry at St. Clare Academy, Hastings on Hudson. She then taught at St. Joseph School, New Rochelle, St. Catherine School, Pelham, and Immaculate Conception School, Tuckahoe.
Sr. Aileen earned both her BS and MA in Education/Reading at Fordham University. She was on the steering committee for Region 1 of the Franciscan Federation, and served on several committees at Immaculate Conception School and the Village of Tuckahoe. An award for an 8th grade graduate is named in her honor and awarded at the graduation exercises every year. This award is given to a student who demonstrates the Christian virtues of kindness, gentleness, and loving service in the spirit of Sr. Mary Aileen.
The family will receive friends at the WESTCHESTER FUNERAL HOME, INC. EASTCHESTER Sunday, October 25, 2020, 2-4 pm. Mass, Monday October 26, 2020 at 10:30 am at Immaculate Conception Church, Tuckahoe. Interment to follow at Mt. Loretto/Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island.
