Obituary for Marie Louise Murphy

Marie Louise Murphy passed away comfortably and peacefully at age 97 in her home in Eastchester, NY surrounded by her two children and family in the early afternoon on February 7th 2021 as the snow fell outside. She was born at home on New York Avenue in Flatbush Brooklyn on July 2nd 1923 to John and Louise O’Connor. Marie had a younger brother Kenneth who she always loved dearly. She was valedictorian at St. Vincent Ferrer School and graduated with honors from Bishop McDonnell High School in Brooklyn.

Marie married John T. Murphy at St Vincent Ferrer Church in Brooklyn on April 15th, 1945. In 1951 they moved to Eastchester and became life-long parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe. They had two children, Eileen and Timothy , who were both truly blessed to have two wonderful parents. After her father passed away her mother Louise joined Marie and her family in their Eastchester home. Marie was a loving mom, wife, daughter and sister and she had the compassion of the Good Samaritan. Marie could sing like an angel and had joined the St Vincent Ferrer Church children’s choir at an early age. By the time she finished grammar school she had earned the nickname “Ave Maria Marie” which became her signature song.
She was a founding member of the Immaculate Conception choir started by Roger Romeo and remained an active member for 30 years. Marie was also a life-long member of the Rosary Society and did volunteer work at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville.

Marie also had outstanding secretarial skills. She worked originally at the American Can Company in NYC. After raising her family she worked as executive assistant for several headmasters at Iona Preparatory School, New Rochelle. The last headmaster she worked for, Br. James Liguori , often said he couldn’t have run the school without her. These skills also helped her as the choir “librarian” who could always be counted on for a copy of any hymn ever sung by the choir.

Marie was predeceased by her husband John T. Murphy and brother J. Kenneth ‘ O’Connor. She is survived by her two children Eileen Murphy-Meyer and Timothy J. Murphy, her son in-law Charles W. Meyer, grandchildren Charley Meyer and Grace Meyer, her sister in-law Dorothea O’Connor and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a funeral mass on Feb 16th at 10:30 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe, NY. The burial will be at Holy Mount Cemetery in Eastchester.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne, NY. Please see link below.
