Obituary for Marianne Frances Spamer

Marianne Frances Spamer passed away on Tuesday Jan 10th 2023 surrounded by her closest family. She was 85 years young.

Marianne was born on September 19, 1937 in Manhattan New York at the former Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital to Frances (Schiegl) and Otto Spamer. She was raised in the Morris Park section of the Bronx, later moving with her family as a teenager to upper Manhattan (Inwood). She received her bachelor’s degree from Fordham University and her Master’s in Education from the College of New Rochelle. As an adult Marianne lived in Riverdale, NY until the 1980s when she moved to Garth Road.

Marianne’s career as an elementary school educator took her from classroom teaching to math lab instructor through various schools, initially among many of the elementary schools of the Archdiocese’s of New York as a Sister of the Presentation and then later in the Yonkers Public Schools. Marianne retired from the Yonkers Public School System in 1995. She then spent the next chapter of her life continuing her love of education through travel, taking up gardening and flower arranging both at home and at the Bronxville Women’s Club, and most importantly to her; helping to raise her beloved niece Caralyn and nephew Donovan.

Marianne was a long-time member of the Bronxville Women’s Club, where she served as a Board Member on various committees and spent her free time tending to the gardens at the club. She loved the friends she made over the years and always used her love and warmth to reach out to others. She was a great communicator, always thoughtful and caring. She made everyone feel special. Marianne loved to travel whether it was exploring a new museum, traveling across this country or abroad; giving her the ability to experience different places and cultures both near and far. A lifelong learner, Marianne always enjoyed new challenges and was known for her attention to detail, love of flowers, and her many fabulous outfits.

Marianne’s love was abundant and unconditional. She cherished her family, above all her niece and goddaughter Caralyn, moving in with her sister Rosemarie to help raise Caralyn and support Rosemarie when her brother-in-law Lorin was diagnosed with ALS. Marianne became Caralyn’s second mom, taking her to school, teaching her how to read, going to all of her school functions, and instilling the values of faith and family. Marianne and her sister Rosemarie are more than sisters, but lifelong best friends, living together, traveling, and enjoying their retirement years together. Marianne loved spending time with her nephew Donovan, his mother Carmel, his wife Kristan, and their children Logan and Hayden. Marianne loved her visits with them and always kept up with all their achievements and milestones, attending their events and calling to check in when she wasn’t able to be there in person.

Marianne is survived by her close and extended family both in the united states and in Germany, and many close friends she has made over the years. She is predeceased by her parents, her older brother Otto, her beloved brother-in-law Lorin, and many other friends and family who are welcoming her in heaven now with a glorious reunion party.
