Obituary for Leonard F. Zaccagnino

Leonard F. Zaccagnino, Sr. passed away peacefully, at his home in New Rochelle, surrounded by his family, on March 23, 2023.

Leonard was born of immigrant parents from Italy, Leonardo and Caterina Zaccagnino, on November 7, 1932. He grew up in New Rochelle and graduated from New Rochelle High School. Leonard served in the 45th Infantry of the US Army during the Korean War from 1952-1954. He achieved the rank of Staff Sargent. He was awarded the Bronze Medal for heroic service and meritorious achievement. He also received several medals for exemplary service from the Republic of Korea.

On January 23, 1955, Leonard married the love of his life, Joan Morano. Together, they raised 6 children. Leonard worked in the beverage industry for 51 years; first with New York 7Up Bottling Co., and then as Senior Vice President of Operations for Canada Dry and Pepsi Cola Bottling Companies of New York, until his retirement in 1999. He was also a volunteer fireman for the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department from 1962-1980. Leonard loved sports and was an avid Yankee and Giants fan, and he enjoyed playing tennis and golf with his sons, friends and colleagues. He was also passionate about gardening and spent months each year growing tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, green beans, and much more, especially at his childhood home in New Rochelle.

Family was the most important part of Leonard’s life, and he cherished his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, enjoying endless family events and celebrations, and weeks in the summer on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. Leonard was a devoted son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend to so many.

Leonard is survived by his beautiful wife of 68 years, Joan, and his children Edith (Robert) Barasch, Leonard (Mala), Daniel (Rosie), Joan (Carmine) Giordano, Thomas, and Robert (Lisa), 20 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and countless cousins, nieces and nephews. Leonard was predeceased by his parents, and his brothers Joseph, Nicholas and Donato.

Leonard was a man of Catholic faith and a parishioner at St. Joseph’s in New Rochelle, and Sts. John and Paul in Larchmont.

Leonard was also blessed in recent years with extraordinary health aides, especially David and Natasha.
