John Edward “The Judge” Mercurio
John Mercurio, also affectionally known as The Judge, passed on the morning of March 30, 2020 just shy of his 92nd birthday. A longtime resident of Eastchester, he was known for his big heart, his green thumb and his incredible homemade pizza.
John was born in the Bronx, New York to Mariano and Carmela Mercurio on April 9, 1928. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gilda and his daughters Lynn Mercurio, Kathy Touris and Gina (Joseph). John was predeceased by his son, John Mark, and was a father figure to many. He was the beloved grandfather to Melissa (David) Vigue, Alexandria Touris, Kaitlynn Mercurio, Danielle DiMartino, Bianca DiMartino and John Mariano Mercurio and great grandfather to Olivia Mae Vigue and Lily Marie Vigue.
John was the Superintendent of Parks for the City of Mount Vernon for more than 40 years putting his love of all growing things to work for the city he called home. He studied botany at the School of Professional Horticulture at the New York Botanical Gardens. As a young man, John served his country, enlisting in the U.S. Navy deploying to the South Pacific during World War II from 1946-1947.
As an adult, John was dedicated to and very proud of the family he built with Gilda. Outside of his love of family, John was a home chef, gardener extraordinaire and a true artist whether drawing portraits of friends, landscapes or mouse cartoons for his grandchildren. He owned and loved dogs over the years and even trained the squirrels and rabbits in his yard. When not cooking a classic Italian delicacy, John could be found holding court in his driveway, chatting with neighbors and friends. He will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched daily.
Due to the present situation, we are unable to have a traditional funeral. We thank all who would have wanted to pay their respects. A celebration of a life well lived will be held in the future.
