John Bennett Carnahan, a long-time resident of Eastchester NY, passed away on January 15, 2021 at the age of 89. Known for his love and dedication to family, friends, church and community, John died peacefully at home in Oakland ME with family by his side. He was born in Bronx NY on November 13, 1931 to Arthur and Marion (Baulieu) Carnahan. John grew up in Mount Vernon NY, and along with his brother Robert "Bob" and friends enjoyed riding wagons, sailing model boats, sledding and playing ice hockey in the summers and winters around Pelham Reservoir. As teenagers John and his brother were recruited into the VFW Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps and plenty of good times were had participating in parades, competitions and dances. The family also made many happy memories traveling, swimming and fishing on a 14' Dory from Larchmont to the Whitestone Bridge on Long Island Sound. After high school John went to work at New York Telephone, and as the Korean War began he joined the Naval Air Reserve at age 19 following his father and brother as a Naval Airman. In 1951 John needed a date to the square dance when he ran into Jane Cusson from high school days also working at New York Telephone. John and Jane were married in 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon and their 3 sons were born over the next 14 years. In 1962 they purchased what would become their long-time residence in Eastchester. For 60 years John and family were active members at Echo Bay Yacht Club on Long Island Sound where many friendships and memories were made boating, swimming, at cookouts, dances, card parties, and simply having a good time. The family was also very involved at Eastchester Presbyterian Church where they created long lasting friendships. One of John's greatest joys was singing and he joined 50 choir members from churches throughout Westchester in what became The Hollwegs Choir. For many years the choir performed five or six concerts a year to churches and music halls in Westchester and New York City. For 55 years John and family were blessed with wonderful friendships in Eastchester and made many happy memories vacationing with friends to East Hampton and the Belgrade Lakes area of Maine. John, Bob, their families and friends also made countless treks to Maine for the annual fishing trip complete with great fishing stories, food and friendship. After 41 years, John retired in 1990 from New York Telephone and a career that took him from the mailroom, to the crafts, to Auditing, Revenue Analysis and finally as a Director of Quality. In 2016, John's wife and sweetheart of 62 years passed away and in 2017 he moved to one of the family's favorite lakes in Maine. John lived a good, full and honest life. He cared deeply about his family and friends, taught his family so much, worked hard, had a great sense of humor and was deeply loved.
