Inez Baker died peacefully on January 22, 2023 at the age of 88. Inez was born and raised in Surrey, England, where she met and married her husband of 61 years, Walter. Together, they emigrated to Canada for two years, and then to Poughkeepsie and Westchester County, following Walter’s career path with the IBM Corporation. After 15 years in the United States, they became American citizens, while still being rooted in their English family and heritage.
While Inez trained and worked as an administrative assistant, she stopped working when she married to focus on family, the household, and numerous volunteer community commitments including the March of Dimes and the Dutchess County Office of the Aging. She was very proud of helping create a senior citizen shopping discount program in Dutchess County. Later, she worked as a realtor and an administrative assistant at the New York Power Authority.
After Walter’s retirement, they enjoyed being grandparents and traveling. In retirement, Inez enjoyed making her exquisite knitted items for the volunteer group Knitwits to support White Plains Hospital. They had a home on the coast in Maine, which started as a beloved second home, but which they made their permanent residence for many years. Inez moved back to the Brightview Senior Living Community in Tarrytown several years ago to be closer to family. She enjoyed exercising her sharp mind on playing bridge and words with friends, watching professional tennis and cat videos, and answering Jeopardy questions before the contestants did.
Inez is survived by her son Stephen Baker and daughter Lindsay Baker, their spouses, and 8 grandchildren: Arleigh, Katherine, Kelsey, Shannon, Laura, Jillian, James, and Rhianna. She is predeceased by her loving sister, Angela Harding.
A private family service will be held in Maine at a later date. Expressions of gratitude for her life can be made by donating to Feeding Westchester (
