Obituary for Gordon Russell Chenery

Gordon Russell “Beansie” Chenery was born in New York City, NY on April 5, 1943. He was the first of two children born to Una Harrigan Chenery and Gordon Chenery.
Gordon’s education began at P.S. 39 Elementary School in the Bronx, NY and continued at Junior H.S. 52 with graduation from Morris High School in 1961.
He furthered his educational pursuits at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in NYC where he enhanced his talents for designing women’s fashions. Many of his designs were featured in the NY Times Fashion Section.
“Beansie” as close family and friends affectionately called him, loved Jazz music, his favorited female vocalists were Billie Holiday, Dakota Staton and Diana Ross. He absolutely loved going to Jazz clubs and was known to be a great dancer and the “life of the party” at all occasions. He was extremely proud of his West Indian Heritage especially the foods and music. His mother’s family roots were in the Dutch West Indies Saint Eustatius Island.
“Beansie” loved sports and was an avid NY Knicks fan.
One of the renowned Black poet Langston Hughes’ poems to sum up Gordon Chenery’s life…”I play it cool and dig all jive that’s the reason I stay alive; my motto is as I live and learn is dig and be dug in return.”
Mourning his loss is his loving brother Les Chenery; cousins Maxine Jackson, Beverly Williams, Elyse Williams and Robin Nickens; his goddaughter Kimberly Morgan; close friend Ernestine Washington; and a host of other relatives and friends.
