Obituary for Evelyn Ruth Metropolski (Rosenberg)

Evelyn Metropolski (née Rosenberg) of Gaithersburg, previously of Eastchester, NY, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2020.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Evelyn spent her first years in Caldwell, NJ and then moved to the Bronx, where she spent the rest of her childhood. Evelyn attended Evander Childs HS and later The New School and CCNY to study acting and theatre. In 1946, Evelyn married Victor Metropolski and in 1955, the Metropolski family moved to Yonkers, NY. In 1963, Evelyn and Victor moved to Eastchester, NY with their three daughters, Janice, Nancy and Ann. In 2011, Evelyn moved to Gaithersburg, Maryland to be close to family.

Evelyn was very involved in her community. She was chairman of the Northeast Yonkers Girl Scouts, a member of the Eastchester Woman’s Club and a member of the (Eastchester) Town Hall Community Theatre for 30 years, where she was proud to be the first woman president.

Evelyn became a professional actor in 1981, when she joined Screen Actors Guild (SAG), AFTRA and Equity and remained a member for the rest of her life. She was known as “Evy Metro” in the acting world and appeared in numerous productions including Soaps (“As the World Turns”, “All My Children”), TV series (Sopranos, +), Feature Films, TV Commercials and print modeling. She was especially proud of her “Senior Moment” segment on the Stephen Colbert Report.

Throughout her life Evelyn gave to charity, kept up with world events, and especially loved to be out meeting new people where she touched so many lives with her warmth. After moving to Maryland, she made many new friends and became known as the “Mahjong Queen” due to her affinity for playing and teaching this ancient Chinese game. But perhaps most important to Evelyn were her six grandchildren, who she kept close to despite their living across the US and in Norway.

She is survived by her daughters Janice Levine (Dan), Ann Metropolski (Pål Gjesdal) and grandchildren Tracey Elise London (Brad), Rob London (Kanmani), Jon Levine, Matt Levine (Nicole), Erik Gjesdal and Benjamin Gjesdal. A year ago, she was blessed with a great grandson, Kavi. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Victor and daughter Nancy London.
