Obituary for Eugene Joseph Colucci II

Eugene Colucci, age 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 28, 2023, after a battle with cancer. Eugene was born to Eugene and Dorothy on July 6, 1954. He resided in Rockaway, Queens throughout his youth before departing to study at Niagara University. Gene later returned to Queens and completed his master’s at St. John’s University. Eventually he and his wife Elizabeth settled in Eastchester, NY where they raised their family.

Eugene, a loving husband and father, was exceedingly patient and a wise counselor. A great listener, he had a knack for providing thoughtful and grounded guidance when asked to do so. He is fondly remembered for his sense of humor, willingness to help others and never ending kindness.

Passionate about gardening, Eugene enjoyed spending time in his yard. He spent much of his downtime tending flowers, his pond, and fountain. Movies were a lifelong source of joy for Gene. He particularly liked going to the movies with his sons John and Gene III.

Gene’s favorite time of year was Christmas. He enjoyed decorating his home extensively, sharing meals with loved ones and giving gifts. His love for Christmas reached it’s height when he began dressing up as Santa for his grandchildren.

An avid collector of antiques, Gene became an expert on Meissen porcelain. He most enjoyed trading pieces, frequently attending shows, and collaborating with other collectors.

An accountant by trade, Eugene worked in finance for his entire career, making a special mark in the healthcare sector. His career started at Blue Cross followed by NYC Health and Hospital, Touche Ross, Mount Vernon Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, and more recently Bridgeport Hospital. At Greenwich, Gene served as Senior Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer for the past 34 years. Under his leadership as CFO of Greenwich, the hospital achieved profitability which it continued throughout his career. Gene was integral in affiliating Greenwich Hospital with the Yale New Haven Health System. He helped lead the capital campaign that transformed the Greenwich campus into the facility it is today. This included the construction of the new Hospital (Helmsley and Watson Pavilions) as well as the Bendheim Cancer Center. He led the creation of the beautiful community garden which has been a place of peace and reflection for the community, patients, and staff. In collaboration with Information Technology, he led the implementation of the first electronic medical record system at Greenwich Hospital. He was a kind leader and mentor to many who cared deeply about the team. Gene was the motivation behind holiday decorations at the hospital which brightened the staff and patients’ days. Gene was named CFO of the year by Fairfield County Business Journal in 2013 and was honored with Greenwich Hospital’s Marian Nowak award in 2022.

Gene is survived by his wife Elizabeth of 42 years, his son John and wife Liz, Eugene and his fiancée Amanda. Gene has two amazing grandchildren, Julian (4) and Luca (2). He also is survived by his sisters Corinne and her husband Ray, Dorothy and her husband Louis, and many nephews and nieces. Eugene is pre-deceased by his parents Eugene and Dorothy, his brother Thomas, Mother-in-Law Anna and Father-in-law John DeGrazia.
