Obituary for Ethel Eger (Runeborg)

Ethel Eger, formerly of Scarsdale, NY, passed to eternal life on October 10, 2019. She is survived by her niece, Ruth Runeborg (Paul Watkins) of Skokie, IL, and a nephew, Robert Runeborg of Somerset, NJ, plus many cousins in Sweden and dear friends everywhere. She was predeceased by her ex-husband, Dean C. Eger, Jr. and their son, Carl (d. 1991).
Ethel was born June 4, 1930 to Ellen (Forslund) (d. 1978) and Arvid Runeborg (d. 1931), and raised in a musical household with an older brother, Arvid H. Runeborg (d. 1986) and several loving uncles, speaking Swedish at home and in her Brooklyn neighborhood.
Ethel graduated from Bay Ridge (all-girls) High School with honors in French, Latin and biology in January 1948, and sang alto with the All-City Chorus. In 1949 she travelled by ship to Sweden with her mom to visit relatives, followed a few years later by a grand tour of Europe with some girlfriends. She graduated from the renowned Washington School for Secretaries in NY City and was placed as an executive secretary to senior partners. After Carl graduated from high school, she returned to the full-time workforce (Revlon Health Care, AS Hansen, Mercer) and retired to a part-time position at the Scarsdale Ballet School, while taking numerous trips all over the world.
In 2009, she moved to Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains, NJ where she continued her lifelong avocation of singing…in the Protestant choir and other vocal performances. She had a long affiliation with Asbury Crestwood United Methodist Church of Tuckahoe, NJ, and the former Asbury Summer Theatre. In lieu of flowers, she requested a contribution to Asbury Church, 167 Scarsdale Road, Tuckahoe, NY 10707.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Cedar Crest Interfaith Chapel, Pompton Plains, NJ at 12:30pm on October 15, 2019.
