Obituary for Elizabeth Lockhart (Delaney)

Elizabeth (Betty) Lockhart, age 92, departed this life peacefully on May 25, 2020 at her home in Eastchester, New York, surrounded by family. She was born and raised in County Carlow, Ireland, to Margaret (Carroll) and John Foy, the third of nine children.

Betty attended the Royal Army Medical Corps in Northern Ireland during World War II to train as a nurse. She moved to London as a young woman in 1948 where she lived until 1964 when she came to the United States. She worked for many years at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. She married Joseph J. Delaney, of Eastchester in 1974; he predeceased her in 1998. In 2003, she married Ronald S. Lockhart of Eastchester; he predeceased her in April 2020.

For over 50 years, Betty was a devoted parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Eastchester, where she was an active member of the Legion of Mary, the Altar and Rosary Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was a past president of the Legion of Mary.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Foy and his wife, Sharon; her grandchildren: John (Karen) Foy, Geraldine O’Loughlin, Michael (Anusha) Foy, Emma (William) Foley and Sarah Foy; 12 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren, all of the U.K. and Ireland. She is also survived by her stepchildren: Joan Lockhart, Judith Lockhart, Susan Lockhart (Stephen Jambor) and Kenneth (Amelyn) Lockhart, and their children and grandchildren.

She leaves her sisters: Margaret McNulty, Julia Duffy, Ann Stevens and her sister-in-law, Sandra Foy. She is also survived by her brother William (“Bill”) Foy and his wife, Phyllis, of Peekskill, with whom she shared a very special relationship. She was the beloved “Auntie Betty” to Phyllis and Bill’s children and grandchildren: Annmarie (Gabriel) and son Benjamin; John Foy and daughters Ava and Fiona; and Aimee (Jason) Hahne and children Oscar and Mabel. She was also loved by dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by several of her siblings: Mamie Foy, Esther Tierney, Thomas Foy and John (“Jackie”) Foy.

Betty loved travel, lunches at Ciaos with the girls, family barbeques and gatherings (especially if they included chicken wings), throwing parties and any opportunity to give one of her trademark speeches. She loved her family and her best friend Nancy Colangelo dearly, and was a caring and genuine friend to all who met her.

A mass to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. Contributions in her memory may be made to Jansen Hospice (www.jansenhospice.org http://www.jansenhospice.org) or a local charity of your choice.
