Obituary for Daniel Joseph Nalven

Daniel Joseph Nalven, 91 years young, Husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Friend, was born on July 29th, 1930 to the late Jacob and Gertrude London Nalven, in Kew Gardens, New York. Philanthropist, Mentor, Entrepreneur, Pilot, he took his last flight on February 28, 2022, after a brave fight against long COVID.

Dan graduated from Eastern Military Academy, Stamford Conn., attended University of Connecticut, Stamford, Conn. He was President of the Nalven and Schroeder Insurance Brokerage, New York, managed Real Estate properties and was an Underwriter, Correspondent and Member of Lloyds of London. He was a member of the Westchester County Insurance Agents Assoc. and served on the Board of the Center for the Study of the Presidency, Washington D.C. from 1964 to 1975. He was a Special P.O. with the Briarcliff police Department. He received his pilot’s license in 1961 and flew until the age of 89 years, visiting every state, including Alaska, except Hawaii. Dan was a charter member of the Eastchester, N.Y. Rotary Club. His wife Barbara, also a Rotarian, his co-pilot for their 42 amazing years together, were members of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians (IFFR.) They flew in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and all of the United Kingdom, usually after attending International conventions making long lasting friendships all over the world. Traveling independently, they toured all of Western and most of Eastern Europe, China, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand, Kenya, Uganda, Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Dan fulfilled a wish and in 1987 he with five other dingle aircraft flew “over the pond” from White Plains, N.Y., landing in Frobisher Bay, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and the Channel Islands of U.K. and to Munich for a Rotary International Convention.

Dan served as President of many organizations and Homeowners Associations. In Tarrytown, New York on the Martling Owners Assoc., the Lagoon Estates Owners Assoc., on Martha’s Vineyard, MA., where they resided part-time for 40 years. After many years of visiting, he and Barbara, both retired, settled permanently in Sarasota in 2007, where he served on the Board of One Watergate Association. Dan was Secretary of the Florida Homestead Corp. land developers, founded by his father Jacob in 1950. In 1994 he established and was Chairman for 16 years, the Rotary Project in Westchester County, N.Y. the Gift of Life, providing open heart surgery in local hospitals to children in need from around the world. A member of Angel Flight, he flew many trips with medical patients in need of transportation to distant medical facilities in his Bonanza. His legacy was his associations away from work and had been with organizations whose purpose is designed to help assist or perform for the betterment of others. His philanthropy included many local, national, and international charities. He did not look for accolades. Dan was humble, honest, well respected by all. He had a jovial disposition and a wonderful gift of gab. He loved theater, ballet, ice hockey, football, golf, adventurous dining, reading and flying.

Dan leaves his children Daniel M. Nalven, Bridgeport, Conn. Gary (LiYu) Nalven, Winston-Salem, NC, Beth Koeppen (Larry Rosenthal) Northbrook, IL.

Carly (Ryan) Lovalette, Montrose, N.Y., Katie (Robbie) Stevens, Cortlandt, N.Y., Mollie (Francesco) Arbolino, Congers, N.Y., Gary (Laura) Nalven, Hagerstown, MD. Henry (Shiyan) Nalven, Greensboro, NC, John Koeppen (fiancée Lauren) Nashville, Tenn., Melissa (Patrick) Costello, Vernon Hills, IL. Annie Wei Nalven, Winston-Salem, NC, Dawn Cochran, Buffalo, N.Y.

Step grandchildren James Heims, Irvington, N.Y., Dania (Aaron) Huff, Springfield, OR. Maggy Tryk (Eric) Hadley, Eugene, OR. His loved and adored Great Grandchildren Ella and Cora Costello, Jacob Nalven. Steps Greats Caity and Brennan Huff, Coltrane and Daphne Tryk. He was a caring Uncle to many nieces and nephews scattered all over the country and devoted to niece and nephew Wendy and Richard Poulos of Sarasota. Dan was preceded in death by his brothers Albert, Harold, Robert, Lionel and David.

Dan and Barbara were spiritual soul mates and lived a blessed and charmed life.

He is now at peace and will be missed.
