Obituary for Corinne Birdie (Doonan)

Corinne B. Birdie obituary January 29,1923—August 31, 2023

Corinne Barbara Birdie (Doonan), wife, mother, grandmother, centenarian, educator, and Tuckahoe Housing Authority (THA) Executive Director, passed away peacefully after a short illness on August 31, 2023 in Herndon, VA at Great Falls Assisted Living. She was 100 years old.

Corinne, or Allie, as she was known to family and close friends, was an alumna of Hunter College, and a dynamic woman who had a deep and abiding love of God and belief in her Roman Catholic faith. A communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church spanning seven decades, she instilled in her children that same love; along with a sense of duty and responsibility to the family, community and church.

Predeceased by her husband Edward, to whom she had been married for over 60 years, she is survived by sons Edward J. (Angela Ottomanelli), Charles V. (Lesley) and daughter Janet M. Prato (Gregory); and grandchildren Stephanie Corinne, Felix Charles, Victor Edward, Gemma Hope, and Skylar Beau.

Born and raised in the Bronx; the youngest of an Irish German family of four sisters, Corinne met her future husband, Edward, on a blind date after the war and was married in September 1951. Moving to Tuckahoe in late 1959 they raised their family and put down strong roots there. She started working for the THA in the early 1960’s and retired as it’s Executive Director in 1987. She was proud that the THA was consistently recognized by HUD as one of the best small housing authorities in Region II.

In 2015 she moved from Tuckahoe to East Marion, NY and then in 2020 to Virginia to be close to Charles and Lesley.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to “Corrine Birdie’s Squadron for the Westchester Walk of the Westchester Alzheimer’s Association, Suite # 306, 2900 Westchester Ave., Purchase NY 10577.
