Obituary for Barbara Walzer

Barbara R. Walzer of Pompano Beach, FL, formerly of Eastchester, NY, passed away at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on June 1, 2022.

Born to John and Anna (Rudolph) Roberts on October 20, 1942, Barbara was raised in Forest Hills, NY and attended Convent of the Sacred Heart School (‘60). In 1964, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Marymount Manhattan College. Later in life she completed her formal education with a Masters of Library Sciences from Queens College.

Barbara married John J. Walzer, Jr. on June 4, 1966. Together they raised John (3rd) and Michael, and followed John’s career in the FBI to Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Washington, DC and Miami, ultimately settling in Eastchester, NY in 1978.

Music was always a passion for Barbara and while living in Miami, she began a more formal education in music studies. This led to teaching private lessons in piano and organ. For over a decade, Barbara served as an enthusiastic member of the choir as well as leader of song at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Scarsdale, NY. In 1986, Barbara brought her passion for music to the William Schuman Music Library at Sarah Lawrence College, retiring in 2011 as Head Music Librarian.

Barbara’s talents and interests extended beyond music. Her passions were many. She enjoyed tennis, bridge, beaches and platform tennis. She had a zest for life, family, and friendship. Over the years Barbara forged many deep friendships. In everything she did, and everywhere she went, Barbara created lifelong bonds.

When retirement came, John and Barbara lived in several locations; each was special to them, offering a network of treasured friends and social activities that filled their days with meaning. The Bermuda House in Pompano Beach, FL was their permanent residence. Summers were spent at Ocean Dunes in Amagansett, NY. They were active members of Coral Ridge Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Fox Meadow Tennis Club in Scarsdale, NY.

Barbara was steadfastly proud of her Catholic faith and her Ukrainian heritage.

Barbara is survived by her husband John; her sons John (Lori) and Michael; her “Grands” Jack, Ryan, Michaela and Colin; sisters Joan Roberts and Carolyn Martin; in-laws Annemarie and Bill Callahan and Tom and Kathy Walzer. Barbara embraced her extended family and loved being “Aunt B” to her godchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday June 15, 2022 at Westchester Funeral Home, 190 Main Street, Eastchester, NY 10709.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:45AM on Thursday June 16, 2022 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 8 Carman Road, Scarsdale, NY 10853.
