Barbara Chalfant Harvey, our beloved mother, grandmother and mother-in-law, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2023. Barbara is survived by her son, Christopher, her grand-daughters Emma and Allison, and her daughter-in-law, Samantha. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Stanley (Stan) and her younger son, Jonathan. Barbara was born on March 9, 1932, in Morgantown, West Virginia, and was the only child of Leslie Homer Chalfant and Elsie Glisan. She had a peripatetic youth as her father’s career in mining engineering took her family to successive postings in the West Virginia and Pennsylvania region, principally Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Wilson College and was Phi Beta Kappa. She loved to read, beginning from her youth, and she wrote her senior thesis on Henry James. She was employed as an editor in book publishing with the McGraw-Hill Book Company. She and Stan raised their two children in Mamaroneck, New York. Upon their retirement, Stan and Barbara moved to Sarasota Florida, where they enjoyed retired life for many years. In addition to her love for them, her children always remembered her great enjoyment of reading, her dry wit and love of Masterpiece Theater.
The family will receive friends at the Westchester Funeral Home, Inc., Eastchester, Friday, January 27, 2023, 4-7 PM.
