Obituary for Arthur C. Ostlund

Arthur C. Ostlund, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on January 26, 2022, at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family. Art met the love of his life, Jean, at a candy store on Lincoln Avenue in Mt. Vernon in 1954, and together they made a wonderful life.

After graduating high school Art served in the US Army before completing his Bachelor’s degree from Iona College and Master’s Degree from Yeshiva University. Art (Mr. O) was a much-loved history teacher, as well as a golf, bowling, tennis and JV baseball coach at Tuckahoe high school where he taught for 30+ years. He was instrumental in the formation of the Tuckahoe Community Action Program (CAP). Art began his career student teaching at Saunders high school in Yonkers and ended his career tutoring at Rye Psychiatric Hospital.

Art loved to travel the world with Jean, and was active in tennis, golf, platform tennis and bowling throughout his senior years. He was quick with a smile, a kind word or some good-natured teasing. The family has many treasured memories of summers spent at the VT house by the Green River in Sandgate/Arlington VT with lifelong friends (the Browns and Smiths), usually with a dozen kids playing ‘around the house tag’ for hours, swimming in the Battenkill River, and swinging from the rope attached to the West Arlington Covered Bridge. Many more memories include other lifelong friends (the Mittlestadts, Buehlers, and Speniks).

Art (Pop to his family) is survived by his wife Jean of 67 years; a son Clifford (Robin) Ostlund, daughters Kathleen (Robert) Pizzarello, Diane (Richard) Pizzarello, Barbara Arnold, Marjorie (Kenneth) Harrington, and grandsons Adam (Saya) Hayes, Patrick (Kait) Baginski, and Eric Ostlund.

Calling hours are Monday January 31, from 4-8 pm (Service at 7pm) at Westchester Funeral Home, 190 Main Street, Eastchester, NY 10709. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society. https://www.cancer.org/
