Obituary for Anthony Frank Provenzano Sr.
Anthony Frank Provenzano, Sr, was called home to the Lord on October 3, 2019. He was the soulmate of his wife of nearly 65 years, high school sweetheart, Edythe “Eda” (Volpe). The devoted son of the predeceased Salvatore and Maria (Nicolazzi). Beloved father of Salvatore (Elaine) of Tuckahoe, NY; Anthony Jr. (Diane) of Plymouth, MA; Joseph (Ann) of Patterson, NY; and Fr. Thomas (SDB) of Washington, DC. Dear brother to Angela Quadrozzi (Vito - predeceased) and baby Anthony (predeceased). He is also survived by eight grandchildren: John (Jenny), Marie Louise, Sarah, Catherine, Elizabeth Farrell (Brian), Marie Rose, Laura Pineau (Michael), Erin, and great-granddaughters, Lilah Provenzano, Charlotte Eda Farrell and Evelyn Farrell. Anthony was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Known to his loving friends and family as Provie or Sonny, he, along with his father, Salvatore, were owners of The Farm green grocer/produce store on Park Place in Bronxville, NY, that was a fixture in the local community from 1946 through 1993.
Anthony was born May 9, 1932 in the Bronx, NY. His family lived in Mount Vernon NY until moving to Tuckahoe NY in the mid-1940’s. That was when he met the love of his life, Edythe Volpe, in the halls of Tuckahoe High School. They had been inseparable these past 70+ years. He starred in football as defensive and offensive end at THS, being voted all county-honorable mention for the 1949 season. After graduating THS in 1950, he began working full time at The Farm until he was drafted during the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Army’s First Cavalry Division and was stationed in Japan until being honorably discharged in 1954. He and Edythe were married December 5, 1954 at the Assumption Church in Tuckahoe, raising their four boys in Tuckahoe, Eastchester, and Bronxville for the following 30 years. Upon closing the store in 1993, Sonny and Edythe retired to Plymouth, Massachusetts.
While in Plymouth, Anthony became actively involved in the Lion’s Club and Meals on Wheels, and was a parishioner of Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor in all situations, particularly during the past ten years while in declining health. He will be greatly missed, loved, and remembered by all fortunate enough to have worked with him, been served by him, and spent time with him in the 87 years of his wonderful life.
Visitation will be held on Sunday October 6th from 3-7pm at WESTCHESTER FUNERAL HOME, INC. EASTCHESTER. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday October 7th at 9:30am at Assumption Church, Tuckahoe. Interment to follow at Holy Mount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Salesian High School, New Rochelle NY or Cranberry Hospice, Plymouth MA.
