Obituary for Agnes M Tretter (Garger)

Agnes Garger Tretter, a devoted mother, daughter, wife, sister and aunt lost her battle to cancer on June 10, 2020, the day prior to her cherished late husband Victor’s birthday and beloved parent’s anniversary. The third child of Austrian immigrants Agnes Schmidt and Ignatz Garger. She was named after her mother, a woman with a heart of gold that Agnes herself lived up to from an early age in many ways. They appropriately enjoyed a very special loving relationship. She was known on the Bronx block as Aggie and although left long ago never forgot her cherished cronies of St. Peter and Paul elementary school that she kept in touch with. Agnes’ effortless academic excellence lead the nuns to push her into the premier academic class of St. Barnabas High School followed by scholarships to Hunter College and Fordham graduate school. She worked for a short while at Catholic Charities until Victor, who knew years prior when he met her as a young girl that would some day be her partner finally could marry her. Together, devoted parents they saw that their three children, Theresa, Edward and Elizabeth graduate from medical, business and law school. They were the joy of their lives. There wasn’t a day that passed that Victor, a business entrepreneur, didn’t need Agnes’ advise. She enjoyed family life and their events more than anything, where she and Victor would often lead the tango. Her company was cherished by her parents, siblings, cousins, in-laws ,nieces and nephews. She would never miss one of their life events. A deeply religious woman she remained close to God and the church throughout her life. She often spoke about the afterlife. She is the first of four children to pass leaving her sister, Anna Foley, brothers, Joseph and Edward Garger and very sadly ends her generation of the Tretter family. She, her wit and intelligence will be missed by many but none more than her three children.
