Remembering my Aunt Ann

I have very vivid memories of you!  You were always happy – talking, laughing, living life!  You were always fun.  You also had the trendiest clothes-always stylish- and great lipstick – either bright red or a color to match your dress!  I seem to especially recall a very pretty sleeveless orange dress with a matching lipstick color!  That was a WOW!  You enjoyed a glass of wine (or two!) and always loved to dance!

When I was very young, you brought me “readers” from your school.  Reading became a lifelong love, but it started at a very young age, thanks in part to you.  I had all the first grade “readers” memorized before I even started first grade (maybe that is one of the reasons that I was able to go through first and second grade in one year – called “skipping” a grade back then).

Family gatherings at our home, Aunt Emilia and Uncle Vinnie’s home, or your home were Sunday/holiday events that meant lots of great food (too much food by today’s standards) and good conversation around the dining room table.  Being the oldest cousin, I was allowed to sit in and participate. We all may not have had a lot back then, but we always had food around the table and our tightknit Italian family, which was, and still is, a treasure for all of us.  It was always a lesson in history, geography and tradition.  And all were welcome – the more the merrier.

When I married and moved away, only returning for holidays and special occasions, our visits became special times but always remembered fondly.  I still miss those days and have tried to instill the same sense of family tradition with my sons.

Uncle Lou (Louie to you) was always at your side.  You were the love of his life. I know that you enjoyed your career, loved and were proud of his accomplishments and those of your children and grandchildren, and looked forward to spending time with them all.  You worked hard and played hard, enjoyed tennis and the time you were able to spend wintering in Florida. You lived a wonderful and full life.

I have included just a couple of photos that I found.  Big smiles all the way around!  I am also glad that I was able to spend time with you when I was in New York last year where you got to meet my “new husband”, Chris.  Right now though, I am imagining that you are with two of my favorite guys – my wonderful Daddy and Tim.  Both had great smiles, too.  I miss them both.

Know that your memory will live on in our hearts.  We will all be here for your family, my Uncle Lou and cousins. I wish I could be there with them today celebrating your life, but they will know that they are in my thoughts and prayers.

With love from your niece - until we meet again.

Angela
