Condolence: My family and I were very blessed to know Geraldine Ruegg.

Our friendship with Geraldine began in 1990 when she taught me how to play the harp. She was patient, encouraging, and helpful. When I was in the school orchestra, she simplified challenging harp pieces so that I could play them. She was such a nurturing teacher that my mom and sister also took lessons from her, and my dad would usually sit in to listen, too.

Though Geraldine was a gifted harpist, we have many other fond memories of her. Perhaps we know her best as a parakeet whisperer since like us, she had parakeets for years. She always kept a green parakeet and named him Prince. Over the years, we sought her advice whenever our budgies got sick, and on numerous occasions, she babysat our birds when we went on vacation.

Geraldine was one of the most generous people we know. When I was at college and homesick, she called me and comforted me. When my mom got the flu, she brought over chicken potpies. Whenever we visited Geraldine, she insisted on serving tea and cookies or ice cream, and sometimes she gave my mom plant cuttings from her greenhouse. She shared recipes with us, including a delicious recipe for asparagus we still use today.

Geraldine never ceased to impress us with her creativity and independence. An accomplished knitter and seamstress, she surprised us with a beautiful cage cover for our parakeets, which has held up well despite many parakeets gnawing on it. Each Christmas, she presented us with homemade caramels or compotes or a trinket hidden in a delicate gift box she crafted from reused holiday cards.

And thanks to Geraldine, we’ve met others who share her generous and kind spirit.

Anyone who knew her was truly blessed, and we will miss her very much.

Condolence: Geraldine was perhaps the closest person I have
in my life. We spoke almost daily, since the
passing of Mildred Dilling in 1983. I have lost
my dearest friend, and shall miss her greatly.
